Research proves that tan people are percieved as more attractive
Being tan doesn’t just make you feel better about yourself—it’s actually been proven by recent studies that tan people are perceived as more attractive and healthier. According to this ABC News article by Courtney Hutchison, researchers utilized the popular site HotorNot.com and found that the pictures with women who’d had their faces photoshopped to be darker were twice as likely to be rated as more attractive than their paler counterparts.
Other articles such as this one in Psychology Today and another in the U.S. National Library of Medicine support the theory, discussing how the Industrial Revolution marked the change in ideal skin tone—when those who had the funds weren’t stuck inside factories but instead vacationed on yachts in St. Tropez and other tropical islands, developing their bronze glow.
There’s one huge hiccup in the plan however, in the form of sun damage. Not only does sun exposure cause dark spots and unsightly premature aging, but it can also be deadly: melanoma is the most fatal form of skin cancer, and it’s been proven that highly concentrated UV ray exposure in the form of tanning beds increases the risk of skin cancer.
